frequ{\^e}ncia. Por{\'e}m, existem tipos de nuvens onde n{\~a}o
h{\'a} uma camada de gelo ou essa camada n{\~a}o {\'e}
suficientemente espessa para justificar a precipita{\c{c}}{\~a}o
associada.
sat{\'e}lite n{\~a}o est{\'a} efetivamente associada a
mitigar essas incertezas. Este trabalho est{\'a} dividido em duas
partes. Na primeira s{\~a}o utilizados dados do sat{\'e}lite
Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM), especificamente dos
sensores PR (Precipitation Radar), TMI (TRMM Microwave Imager) e
algoritmo GPROF (Goddard profiling algorithm - usando o sensor
A distribui{\c{c}}{\~a}o
de frequ{\^e}ncia desse erro assemelha-se a uma
distribui{\c{c}}{\~a}o Gaussiana.
(percentil 20 at{\'e} o percentil 80) e as outras duas, como
subestimativa e superestimativa, representando as caudas da
distribui{\c{c}}{\~a}o. Para categorias com superestimativa e
subestimativa, avaliou-se a estrutura vertical das nuvens. O erro
nuvem, conte{\'u}do de {\'a}gua l{\'{\i}}quida (Liquid Water
polariza{\c{c}}{\~a}o corrigida (Polarization Corrected
Temperature - PCT85)) enquanto o erro de superestimativa {\'e}
apenas fun{\c{c}}{\~a}o do IWP.
algumas caracter{\'{\i}}sticas associadas a casos de
subestimativa e superestimativa. Diferen{\c{c}}as positivas altas
l{\'{\i}}quida, correspondentes a casos que s{\~a}o muitas
vezes superestimados pelo radi{\^o}metro. Por outro lado, os
casos de subestimativa apresentam part{\'{\i}}culas de gelo
menores que n{\~a}o s{\~a}o sens{\'{\i}}veis aos canais de
micro-ondas de alta frequ{\^e}ncia do TMI. Na segunda parte do
trabalho foram utilizados dados do sat{\'e}lite Global
contempla desde a regi{\~a}o das Cordilheiras dos Andes at{\'e}
a costa nordeste do Brasil.
macrof{\'{\i}}sicos e microf{\'{\i}}sicos das nuvens tornam-se
caracter{\'{\i}}sticas semelhantes do regime de
precipita{\c{c}}{\~a}o e topografia.
precipita{\c{c}}{\~a}o.
rela{\c{c}}{\~a}o entre a taxa de precipita{\c{c}}{\~a}o
{\`a} superf{\'{\i}}cie e o IWP se mostrou consistente
sazonalmente e espacialmente.
Esses resultados abrem novas
possibilidades potenciais para melhorar a qualidade das
estimativas de precipita{\c{c}}{\~a}o utilizando micro-ondas
passivo. ABSTRACT: Estimates of surface precipitation obtained
from passive microwave sensors over land are closely related to
the ice path present in the clouds. However, there are cloud types
without any ice or with an ice layer not thick enough to justify
the associated rainfall. For these cloud types, the precipitation
is not estimated correctly, causing an underestimation in the
precipitation. On the other hand, there are cases of deep clouds,
in which the signal produced by ice scattering is not effectively
associated with precipitation, producing, in turn, an overestimate
rainfall. This study analyzes cases that have large errors in the
rainfall estimates obtained from passive microwave data to better
understand and potentially mitigate these biases. This paper is
divided into two parts. In the first part uses data from the
Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite, specifically
the sensors PR (Precipitation Radar), TMI (TRMM Microwave Imager)
and LIS (Lightning Imaging Sensor). Ten years of TRMM data
(2002-2011) are used in the analysis. The study area is
approximately 1,110,000 km2, centered on the city of Manaus in the
Amazon region. The error distribution resembled a Gaussian
distribution. The error population was then divided into three
categories, one class denominated as consistent, in the center of
the distribution (20 percentile to 80 percentile), and the others
two, as under- and over-estimated populations, representing the
tails of the distribution. For over- and under estimated
categories, the vertical structure of the clouds was evaluated.
The underestimation error is correlated with almost all cloud
properties (rain rate, cloud top, LiquidWater path (LWP), IceWater
Path (IWP), polarization and Polarization Corrected Temperature at
85 GHZ (PCT85) while the overestimation error is only function of
the IWP. The use of combinations of low and high frequency
channels was able to identify some characteristics associated with
under- and over-estimated cases. A high positive difference
between the 10 GHz and 85 GHz as well as 19 GHz and 85 GHz is
characteristic of very high scattering at 85 GHz (high amount of
ice) and small liquid water amounts corresponding to cases that
are often overestimated by the radiometer. On the other hand,
underestimated cases have smaller ice particles that are not
sensitive to the high frequency microwaves channels measured by
TMI. In the second part of the work, data from the Global
Precipitation Measurement (GPM) satellite were used for the period
from September 2014 to August 2015, covering an area that extend
the Andes Cordillera and the northeast coast of Brazil. Due to the
performance of different meteorological systems in the study
region, knowledge of the variability of the clouds macrophysical
and microphysical parameters becomes necessary when satellite
rainfall estimation is to be evaluated. Therefore, the objective
of this study was to evaluate the stability of the relationship
between IWP and rain rate for different regions and seasons, as
well as the error in the rainfall estimation and the IWP
estimators. First, the area was divided into four smaller areas
that presented similar characteristics of the precipitation and
topography. For each area, the RR, the IWP and the relationship
between RR-IWP, determined using the GPROF (Goddard Profiling
Algorithm) and CMB (Combined Radar-Radiometer Algorithm)
algorithms were evaluated according to the type of precipitation,
quarter of the year and rain type. The results showed that there
is an overestimation of the GPROF for low values of precipitation
and IWP, in most areas and seasons, and an underestimate for
larger values, especially for convective cases. The relationship
between the surface precipitation rate and the IWP was consistent
seasonally and spatially. An evaluation of the IWP estimate by the
GPROF showed the reason for the errors found in the estimates.
This evaluation revealed that there is a problem in the
determination of IWP by GPROF, caused by the use of the Bayesian
method, which tends to adjust the lower values, which occur less
frequently, to lower values that have a greater sampling of data.
These results open potential new avenues to improve the quality of
passive microwave rainfall estimates.",
